How to Fix Faulty Key Repairs

A malfunctioning key fob could ruin your entire day. With the right tools and guidelines it's simple to solve these issues.

Always make sure to ground yourself prior to attempting repairs to eliminate static electricity. It only takes a second and is a good practice when working with electronics in general.

Check for any debris underneath the bad key. Breadcrumbs and other debris can get stuck under keys, preventing the keys from being properly pushed in.

Broken Car Keys

Car keys are something we take for granted, until they fail or stop working at the most uncomfortable times. Whether you're trying to open the trunk of your vehicle to buy groceries, opening your doors to go to a place or even driving your car and heading to work, car keys can be very frustrating when they do not work.

Over time, keys to automobiles can wear out. They may be damaged due to being thrown around or dropped and the internal components could wear out until they don't function correctly anymore. This is a major issue since it means you won't be able to use your vehicle unless you have an extra key or your mechanic fix the problem.

The majority of broken car keys repair can be easily repaired or replaced. If the key is broken inside the lock or ignition, you can sometimes remove the remaining portion of the key by using pliers or a coated wire. Locksmiths can also provide you with tools for removal that slide along the key and grasp the broken pieces in a pincer-like fashion.

If the repair car remote control key key is broken in half, an easy and cost-effective solution is to super glue the two pieces back together. This is tricky because you need to ensure that the pieces are correctly aligned, but the result can be extremely effective. Keep a pair or scissors and a roll of tape at hand in case you need to alter the alignment.

Replace the battery inside the car key fob in order to fix a broken key. If your car key fob isn't turning on and you don't yet have a replacement then this is the ideal solution. Depending on the type of vehicle, you can often do this by removing the key fob and then opening it with a screwdriver or a small tool.

If the issue is more severe for instance, your key fob becomes completely unresponsive or doesn't start at all, you'll need to get it replaced. You can do this at the dealer, but an auto locksmith will typically be more affordable. They will come to you and make the needed repairs or even replace the key fob.

Broken Key Fobs

As with all electronic devices car key fobs are no exception to malfunction. Fortunately, they're not that difficult to fix when they cease to function. The first thing to do is figure out what the issue is.

Most of the time, when a key fob stops working it's because the battery is dead. The replacement of the battery is the most simple and most affordable solution, and is something you can do at home.

If changing the battery doesn't work, you can try disassembling it and cleaning it. The circuit board of your fob contains "contact pads" that correspond to every button on the fob. (Lock buttons and trunk buttons for example.) Contact pads have a rubbery feeling and are coated with an electricity-conducting film which wears off over time. With a cotton swab, and some rubbing alcohol, you can wash the contacts in your key fob to remove any corrosion that could be stopping them from functioning.

If you suspect that your contacts are loose or broken, you can use a pair tweezers. If you do this, it is an excellent idea to put some silicone on the back of your key fob prior inserting the new contacts. Silicone will protect the contacts from out water.

Another possibility for a non-functioning key fob is that it has become un-paired with the vehicle. When you push the key fob button it transmits a code to the car that informs it what it is trying to do. If the key fob is not paired it will not recognize the vehicle, and it will no longer allow you to start your engine.

If you're unable to get your key fob back to be paired with the vehicle, it's likely to call a locksmith or dealership technician. They'll have the equipment required to reprogram the fob and get it working again. It's likely that you'll need to pay for the service but it's cheaper than purchasing a brand new key fob.

Keys that aren't responsive

If the keyboard key stops working, it can be a complete nightmare. The first step is to make sure that the repair key fob isn't blocked by something physical. Over time, dust, hair and other debris may accumulate and disrupt the circuitry of the key. Try gently removing your key and clean it up by using a rag soaked with rubbing alcohol. This is sometimes all that's required to get your key back in working order.

If the key isn't working after trying all these things it could be an issue with the software. Certain keys are linked to specific actions in games and if your key isn't performing as you'd like it to, you should check your game settings to confirm that the key is properly associated with the game.

It is also possible to reinstall the drivers for your keyboard to resolve the issue. It is recommended to upgrade your drivers as often as you can to ensure that your keyboard doesn't stop functioning because of corrupted or outdated ones.

The key could be damaged. Key switches are made up of two circuits, and they could wear out over time until the point that they cannot longer register a press. If this happens the best solution is to replace the entire keyboard since it will likely no longer work properly.

If you've tried all of these solutions but the keyboard does not respond then it's time to have an expert examine your laptop keyboard or an external computer keyboard. There may be a physical problem with the membrane that covers your keyboard or it could be that one of the keys has become defective.

To find out, you'll need to test the keys on the keyboard tester website. The website will tell you whether the keys are functioning correctly or not. If they are being registered correctly, then it's likely to be a software issue. You can then start applying the fixes you have made to restore full functionality. Alternatively, you could consider using an external keyboard to temporarily solve the issue until the internal keyboard can be repaired or replaced.

Keys that aren't working

Keys that don't function are a huge problem, but fortunately, they're generally easy to fix. Most times keys that malfunction are caused by a piece of grime underneath the key or simply not properly connected to the laptop or keyboard. If you are unsure then clean the keys using canned air and blow out any dirt or dust.

The key could have become misaligned. This is another problem which can be resolved with an expert, however it is more likely to require replacement of the key. If you own an electronic key and it cannot be turned using a metal key the transponder chip might have stopped working. You'll need a new key that is programmed.

Try a key testing website to determine if your keyboard or laptop are not responding. This will allow you to determine if your keyboard is malfunctioning or if software is causing problems.

A switch that's not functioning properly could be the cause of the key not functioning as expected. If you have a mechanical keyboard you can examine this by looking under the keycap and observing whether there's any debris stuck to it. If you spot anything, wash it away by using canned air. Then take off the cap. This will allow you to replace the hooks that connect the retainer to the switch, and hopefully bring back functionality to the key.

If a particular key on your keyboard only does not perform its intended function in a particular program, it's likely that the key is mapped to another action through the game's keyboard settings. Check the settings for your keyboard and then press the key again to verify if it's functioning. If you're having issues you should buy a new keyboard. It can be installed by professionals. This is especially true when you're playing a game that requires the use of a lot of keyboards.
